LEGO Superheroes The Tumbler

I bought the Tumbler set during a bit of LEGO shopping spree at the LEGO Store in Sherway Gardens in Toronto last year. 3 large sets that took the better part of a week to assemble during spare time.

The Tumbler was one of the first newer, more modern large sets I’ve purchased and it was eye opening. Since the last time I bought a large set, a lot of new bricks and connectors were introduced, along with some new building techniques and imaginative assembly methods. These newer building methods really bring the LEGO Tumbler to a new level of matching the original item.

At 1869 pieces, you can imagine how much work went into designing this. There are details hidden inside both the engine and the cockpit that you will almost never see in the finished model, but the LEGO engineers felt were important enough to include. The seats and control systems are fully realized even though they’re not seen by and large. The engine is incredibly detailed, and then gets covered up.

One thing to note is that this is not a vehicle designed to match the minifig scale. Although 2 minifigs are included, Batman and The Joker, they don’t fit inside the vehicle or match the size. They’re designed to accompany the detailed display sign that’s included. If you want to play with the finished Tumbler there are several moving parts including steering and adjustable panels.

There are versions of the Tumbler in other, smaller LEGO sets and some people have said they’re “better” with some details this one is lacking, and also because those smaller sets are playable. Have a look at the tiny bagged set LEGO DC Comics Batman Tumbler (30300) and Joker’s Ice Cream Surprise.

If you’re building this and planning to keep it that way, you should know the finished LEGO Superheroes Tumbler is quite a large set when it’s complete. When it’s done, the Tumbler measures over 5″ (15cm) high, 15″ (40cm) long and 9″ (24cm) wide so it takes up a lot of space to display or store it.

Summary

The only real low score here is in Playability. Even though someone could totally play with the Tumbler, the scale is a problem. It isn't a bad comparison to some other toys, but doesn't match anything else in the LEGO universe and doesn't match minifigures, so it gets dropped a few points.

8.4/10
