LEGO Technic McLaren F1 Set Revealed with Working DRS for the First Time

0

The LEGO Group is celebrating McLaren’s incredible 2025 Formula 1 season in style with the all-new LEGO Technic McLaren F1 Car set (42228). This stunning 1:8-scale model recreates the MCL39 — the car that powered McLaren to both the World Constructors’ and World Drivers’ Championships — and it’s packed with the kind of mechanical detail that Technic fans live for. At 1,675 pieces and rated 18+, this is a serious build for serious motorsport enthusiasts.

What really sets this one apart, though, is a first for any LEGO Technic build: a working Drag Reduction System (DRS) in the rear spoiler. Remove the engine cover, shift into high gear, and watch the DRS activate — it’s the kind of authentic engineering touch that bridges the gap between the brick-built model and the real thing. On top of that, you’re getting functional steering, suspension, a working gearbox and differential, plus a detailed V6 engine visible under the removable cover. From the iconic McLaren livery to the intricate mechanical functions, every element of this set is designed to deliver a rewarding build experience and a stunning display piece.

Engineering Excellence: The LEGO Group unveils the 2025 Championship-Winning LEGO® Technic™ McLaren MCL39 F1® car

BILLUND, DENMARK – 17 February 2026: Get ready to hit the track and celebrate an extraordinary F1 season! The LEGO Group today unveils the new LEGO® Technic™ McLaren MCL39 F1® Car set, an exhilarating 1:8-scale model designed for adult builders and motorsport fans alike.

Every stage of the build mirrors the real-world engineering that powered McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team to the top of the podium, including functional steering, suspension, gearbox, and a working differential. The detailed V6 engine is visible when the cover is removed. This meticulous recreation delivers a challenging and deeply rewarding experience from the first brick to the final click.

A standout new feature for a LEGO Technic build is the working Drag Reduction System (DRS) in the rear spoiler. This activates when you remove the engine cover and shift into high gear, demonstrating an authentic, dynamic mechanism.

To celebrate the launch, the LEGO Group carried out a stealthy, mischievous mission: overnight, LEGO Technic MCL39 F1 Car models were secretly placed throughout the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC), surprising team members as they arrived for work. This exclusive, world-first look captured genuine reactions as team members explored the new Technic model and its innovative features, bringing a playful moment of joy to the heart of McLaren Racing – watch on YouTube here.

A young girl is building the LEGO Snoopy's Doghouse set on a table.

The LEGO® Ideas Peanuts: Snoopy’s Doghouse Set was designed by Atlanta-based LEGO fan Robert Becker, as part of the LEGO Ideas programme. Once designed and published on the platform, it achieved the landmark 10,000 vote status and following the rigorous selection process by the LEGO Ideas Review Board, was approved to be made into an official LEGO set. The clever, playful design was a crowd favourite among the LEGO Ideas community, making it a popular choice. Talking about his design, Robert said : “I’ve always been a huge fan of Snoopy and the LEGO brand, so I decided to design my own version of him. It wasn’t easy, he and Woodstock are so recognisable that translating them into 3D LEGO models took a lot of trial and error. I originally built them for myself, but over the course of a year my family persuaded me to submit them to the LEGO Ideas platform, and now here we are. I’m beyond excited and honoured that Snoopy is becoming an official LEGO set.”

“This set has so much character, clearly inspired by an iconic scene from the Peanuts comic strip. Giving fans the opportunity to build the campfire scene of Snoopy and Woodstock toasting marshmallows under a starry night is a wonderful representation of a much-loved character. To further enhance the set’s timeless appeal, we added Snoopy’s red doghouse for fans to enjoy,” said Monica Pedersen, Marketing Director at the LEGO Group. “We were delighted that the Snoopy Campfire product idea received over 10,000 votes on the LEGO Ideas platform. Having Snoopy and Woodstock come to LEGO bricks is wonderful for Peanuts and LEGO fans alike.”

Scott Shillet, VP, Global Licensing Hardlines of Peanuts said “We are incredibly excited to partner with the LEGO Group and unveil the first-ever Peanuts set. We know that fans around the world will be delighted to see these two iconic brands finally come together. The charming scene with best friends Snoopy and Woodstock will capture the hearts of Peanuts fans and LEGO collectors of all ages.”

The new LEGO TED partnership, officially called Play@TED, brings together the LEGO Group, the LEGO Foundation, and TED to drive a global conversation about why creative play deserves a central role in homes, schools, and communities everywhere. It’s a bold move that goes well beyond bricks and sets, and it has some seriously exciting plans on the horizon.

At the heart of the LEGO TED partnership is a landmark in-person event at the TED World Theatre in New York City on May 14th, 2026. The day will feature inspiring TED Talks from experts on the transformative power of play, and it’ll be livestreamed to the public so fans and educators worldwide can tune in. The initiative also includes a TED-Ed Connect Week that’s already taken place, bringing together over 300 students aged 8–18 from 27 countries to share how playful learning shows up in their lives. Add in new TED-Ed animations, an educator Action Hub, and globally hosted TEDx play-themed events, and this partnership is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious play advocacy efforts we’ve seen from the LEGO Group yet.

  • The partnership will culminate in a gathering of great minds and leading experts at a Play@TED event in May this year, aimed at helping parents, educators and policy-makers prioritize play in education and communities.
  • Partnership will set the scene for World Play Day, the LEGO Group’s annual celebration of the power of play in support of the UN’s International Day of Play on June 11th.
  • Over 300 children from around the world recently took part in a Connect Week, hosted by TED-Ed, to share ideas and perspectives on why play matters to them.

BILLUND, DENMARK, MONDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2026: The LEGO Group and the LEGO Foundation today announced Play@TED, a partnership with TED to drive a movement and change how people of all ages think about play. Together they want to highlight how creative play can be a game-changer in the world and lead to brighter minds, braver ideas, and a more imaginative future for everyone.

This collaboration, which has been funded by a grant from the LEGO Foundation in support of the UN adopted International Day of Play, seeks to spark a global conversation about the importance of play in nurturing children’s growth, fuelling innovation, and inspiring cultural creativity.

Last month TED-Ed, in partnership with the LEGO Group and the LEGO Foundation, hosted a Connect Week, where more than 300 students aged 8-18 from 27 countries gathered virtually to discuss and reflect on playful experiences that helped them build real-world skills like confidence, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. Students shared how playful learning shows up in their lives via short video response.

The partnership will culminate at an in-person Play@TED event to be held at the TED World Theatre in New York City on 14th May 2026. Curated by TED and aimed at parents, educators and policy-makers, the event will feature inspiring TED Talks from leading experts on the role and impact of creative play. The day, which will be centred around three key pillars: the transformative power of play, play as a mindset for all and how imagination can take us anywhere – and will be livestreamed to the public.

Confirmed speakers so far include Katina Bajaj, a Creative Health Scientist and co-founder & Chief Science Officer of Daydreamers; Randi Williams, AI and Education Researcher at the MIT Media Lab’s Personal Robots group and Maxwell “Hops” Pearce, a player on the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team and an accomplished artist.

Following the Play@TED event, an Action Hub on TED-Ed’s award-winning education platform will be available to help parents, policy-makers and communities turn ideas into action. A Learning Lab, packed with resources, discussion points, quizzes and curriculums, will help educators make play a priority in schools around the world.

TED-Ed’s You Tube channel, enjoyed by 22 million subscribers, will also feature five new TED-Ed animations, exploring topics from brain science to history, demonstrating how play fuels creativity, resilience, and curiosity – driving progress towards bringing more play to society. Additionally, TED’s celebrated TEDx organizers worldwide will host play-themed events, throughout the year, bringing Play@TED ideas to local communities. These events will blend Play@TED talks with local speakers and activities, inviting communities to explore the power of play together.

For over 90 years the LEGO Group has championed the transformative role of play in the lives of children, helping them reach their full potential and develop lifelong skills such as creativity, communication, problem-solving skills and confidence. Inspiring fun, playful learning remains the LEGO Group’s purpose today.

Remi Marcelli, SVP Global Brand Development at the LEGO Group said: “Creative play is more than just fun – it’s a spark for change. By teaming up with TED, we want to ignite a global movement to make play a cornerstone of creativity and innovation in homes, schools and communities everywhere. Together, we are committed to inspiring brighter minds and building a future where play is at the heart of learning and growth in every community.”

Sidsel Marie Kristensen, CEO at the LEGO Foundation said: “Childhood is not just a phase of life – it is the making of one, and play is central to how children grow, thrive and learn. Through Play@TED, we are investing in the ecosystems around children – from families and schools to communities and societies – to strengthen access to creativity and play and help create the conditions for every child, everywhere, to thrive.”

Logan Smalley, Founder and Executive Director of TED-Ed at TED Conferences said: “We often hear that necessity is the mother of invention, and fundamental needs certainly inspire innovation, but many of the most durable, delightful and beneficial points of human progress spring from the desire to collaborate, to entertain and to play. This partnership between TED, the LEGO Group and the LEGO Foundation celebrates that fact, and aims to help people remember that play should be a priority in homes, schools and communities throughout the world.”

Whether you’re a parent, an educator, or simply an AFOL who believes in the power of a good build, the LEGO TED partnership is worth keeping on your radar. The Play@TED event on May 14th will be livestreamed for free, and the resources rolling out through TED-Ed’s platform should give play advocates plenty of tools to work with. It all leads into World Play Day and the UN’s International Day of Play on June 11th. Head to www.ted.com/play for all the details as they develop.

The LEGO Monet Water Lilies Set Is a Stunning Tribute to Art History

0

LEGO and fine art continue to collide in the most beautiful way. The LEGO Group has officially revealed the LEGO Monet Water Lilies set (31220), a breathtaking 3,179-piece addition to the LEGO Art theme created in collaboration with none other than The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This 18+ set reimagines Claude Monet’s iconic 1899 painting Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies — one of The Met’s most beloved works — entirely in LEGO bricks, and the result is absolutely stunning.

What makes the LEGO Monet Water Lilies set so special goes well beyond the piece count. The design team painstakingly layered tiles and plates in both vertical and horizontal directions to mimic Monet’s famous brushwork, translating his dreamy palette of greens, blues, and pinks into LEGO’s signature colour options. From the textured trees and the graceful bridge to the delicate water lilies floating across the pond, this is a set that genuinely captures the spirit of Impressionism — and it comes with a built-in wall hanger so you can display it like the masterpiece it is.

Build a Monet Masterpiece: the LEGO Group reveals the LEGO® Art Claude Monet – Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies

Billund, Denmark – 9 February 2026: Today, the LEGO Group, in collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, announces the new LEGO® Art Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies (31220). This set invites builders to reimagine one of Monet’s most iconic works, originally painted in 1899 and now a highlight of The Met’s collection, as a stunning brick-built masterpiece.

This 3,179-piece LEGO Art set pays tribute to Claude Monet’s masterful brushwork and his profound love of nature, capturing the true essence of the artist’s garden in Giverny, France. The stunning set uses a diverse array of LEGO elements including butterflies, flowers and fruit, to reflect Monet’s love of the natural world. Verdant textured trees, the bridge, and the iconic water lilies of Monet’s original masterpiece are translated into LEGO bricks. The result is a bold reimagining of his work, complete with a built-in wall hanger for easy display in any home.

New imagery captured at The Metropolitan Museum of Art juxtaposes the LEGO set with the original 1899 oil painting. In addition to experiencing Monet’s painting in person, visitors to the Museum will have the unique opportunity to get “inside” the work by posing behind the bridge in a larger-than-life scale LEGO brick reproduction of the painting, on display in The Met Store for a limited time, starting 1st March.

Additional photography captured in Monet’s garden at Giverny showcases the LEGO Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies set within the landscape that inspired Monet’s creation, allowing fans a new view into the creative world of the renowned artist.

LEGO Monet Water Lilies in front of the bridge that inspired it.

Translating Monet’s brushstrokes into LEGO bricks was a key design challenge,” says Stijn Oom, LEGO Designer“The team meticulously created a tactile 3D surface by layering tiles and plates in both vertical and horizontal directions, mimicking the brushwork and carefully adapting Monet’s subtle palette of hues within LEGO’s signature colour options. Reimagining the nuance of the original work in LEGO bricks required certain elements of the work to be abstracted, all while preserving essential details of the composition to evoke Monet’s signature artistic style. The build transforms with viewing distance: individual pixels and textures are visible up close, resolving into a peaceful Impressionist landscape from afar, mirroring the nature of Monet’s later works.”

Builders will discover evocative details within the set. Some plates within the ‘water’ feature subtle colour variations, hinting at Monet’s lively, layered strokes of paint. In the central section, a diagonal stroke of light – prominent in the original painting as it cuts across the trees – has been carefully recreated in the LEGO model with lighter elements running from the top right to the bottom left. The bridge itself, the true focal point of Monet’s composition, anchors the scene, its lines guiding the eye across the expanse of the pond. A gentle asymmetry, with more lilies on the right than on the left, references Monet’s embrace of nature’s irregularities. As the designers playfully noted, “the mistakes make it right,” a philosophy inspired by Monet’s fearless departure from artistic tradition and creation of his own, unique Impressionist style.

Enhancing the building journey, from 1st March 2026, builders can listen to an exclusive podcast featuring Metropolitan Museum of Art curator, Alison Hokanson, delving into Monet’s inspiration and artistry. The set also offers an immersive experience through the LEGO Builder app, featuring 3D instructions.

The LEGO Art Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies (31220) will be available for LEGO Insiders Early Access* from 1st March 2026, and for all from 4th March 2026, priced at £179.99 / €199.99 / $249.99.
