After seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens a couple of weeks ago, I immediately checked my local Lego Store to see about getting Poe’s signature orange-and-black X-Wing. It turns out that this is a crazy popular model, so don’t be surprised if you have to do what I did, and look around different stores to find one. Currently the LEGO Shop@Home store is saying they’re sold out and new orders will ship in 30 days.

Along with the X-Wing itself, the set comes with minifigs of Poe Dameron, Resistance ground crew and a Resistance X-Wing Pilot, plus BB-8, a maintenance sled and an entry ladder, and missiles that can be fired from the wings for that true Star Wars “pew-pew-pew” experience.

The build took approximately three hours with none of the occasional minor mis-steps that can accompany a 700+ piece build. For all of the X-Wing’s complexity, it was only a mildly challenging model that still provided an interesting “this-goes-there” building experience. All 100 steps in the build are clear and well laid out. The repetitive steps involved in building the X-Wing configuration help keeping the build time lower than you might expect.

From the unique colours and intricate stickers to the ingenious gear system that opens and closes the wings, there’s very little to complain about here. My only gripe is that the engine pods extending from the back are each held on with a single pin, and so feel very fragile compared to the solid feel of the rest of the X-Wing. The front landing gear has a slightly delicate feel to it as well.

Because of this, I wouldn’t call this a kid’s toy, per se- Instead, it’s going on my shelf next to my Lego Architecture sets.

I’d say that for $99 CAD, it was definitely worth the price. If you can find one in your local area or don’t mind waiting 30 days for LEGO Shop@Home, you’d do well to grab this model and add it to your collection, whether Star Wars specific or just LEGO sets in general.
