LDD-Cover imageThe LEGO Digital Designer or LDD is a free computer program that has been a great way to “build” or test out a MOC concept without committing to bricks, and now it seems that LEGO has decided to terminate that project effective immediately.

The following message is reportedly being released from LEGO’s AFOL Relations team today.

Good Afternoon everyone, I’ve just touched base with one of our Digital Product Specialists within the Consumer Services team. A business decision has been made to no longer allocate resources towards the LDD program / initiative.

For now, the program will continue to be offered to anyone interested in utilizing it but please do not expect any updates regarding functionality, the adding of new LEGO elements or glitch fixes. We have decided to pursue other digital experiences.

Although this may not be the answer you were hoping for, I hope this information will be of use to your RLUG members. Thank you for your time and continued support for the LEGO Brand & hobby.

Using LDD, people could design a model and output a list of parts and instructions. A quick look through LEGO Ideas shows just how popular this software is, with many of the submissions being either exclusively an LDD concept, or supported by one.

Following the withdrawal of LEGO Digital Designer the only option for doing digital design easily comes down to LDraw. There are some other options, depending on your choice of Windows, Mac or Linux, but most are not as easy to use or well known as LDD since it was supported by the LEGO Group.
