Today the LEGO Group announced the winner of the 2016 LEGO Ideas competition, Round 2. It came as a bit of a surprise that the Women of NASA set won over some of the other sets that are in keeping with existing LEGO themes, but given the history of the Ideas program recognizing science, it shouldn’t be too surprising.

LEGO Ideas submitter 20tauri (Maia Weinstock) created the set which features 4 vignettes featuring the women, as well as a custom frame with their minifigure replicas. The 5 women featured are: Margaret Hamilton, Katherine Johnson, Sally Ride, Nancy Grace Roman and Mae Jemison.

To the left you can see the 12 sets that made up this round of the contest.

  • The Women of NASA
  • Voltron – Defender of the Universe
  • Spaceballs – Eagle 5
  • The Addams Family Mansion
  • The Merchant’s House
  • The Large Hadron Collider
  • LEGO Observatory – Mountain View
  • Modular Construction Site
  • Star Wars UCS X34 Landspeeder
  • Lamborghini Veneno Roadster
  • Lovelace & Babbage
  • The Plum Creek – The Little House on the Prairie

All of these sets gathered the 10,000 supporters they needed before last years deadline. I know there was a LOT of support for some of these sets like the UCS Landspeeder, The Addams Family Mansion and the construction site, but I’m not surprised they didn’t make it. Last year LEGO announced new rules around existing licenses (Star Wars) and obviously felt the rest didn’t fit as well as the Women of NASA. The previous science related sets have been extremely popular among LEGO fans.

The LEGO Ideas team may not be completely finished with this round as the video reveals that the Voltron: Defender of the Universe project is still under review and may see it’s announcement in the near future. I know many fans of the shows are anxious to see this set, so let’s hope it happens!

In the meantime, the following picture shows us what is currently under review for 2016 round 3. Personally, I’m hoping for either the Iron Giant or the Boat Repair shop. But so far I have almost a 0% success rate when predicting this.
